Pakyong
The quaint town of Pakyong is situated on the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, at an elevation of approximately 3670 ft. It is located in the eastern district of Sikkim and has gained popularity
due to the emergence of the Greenfield Airport. This is the first airport in Sikkim, and it was constructed by Punj Lloyd. The word Pakyong is derived from the Lepcha word "pa yong," which means
"bamboo of the bow." Previously, the Lepcha people used to name places after distinct items that were present in that particular location.
30 km from the lively Gangtok, this charming town attracts visitors with its serene atmosphere and gorgeous scenery. The town is bordered by Bhutan and Tibet as well as several suburbs like
Namcheypong, Raigoan, Pachey, Samsing, Dikling, Pachak, Pacheykhani, Dugalakha, Karthok and many more. You might be interested to know that the "National Research Centre for Orchids" is also
located here and is dedicated to studying and experimenting with different orchids.
Wintertime in Pakyong (mid-November to January) is the best season to visit because of the scintillating views of the lofty valley and snow-covered mountains. The showery drizzle months are to be
avoided because a heavy rainfall can lead to threatening landslides.
